Moonstruck, I Wish…
The New Moon and the Ritual of Intention
The moon symbolizes feminine energy, the force behind my creativity, and the source of my emotional existence. When I gaze at the moon, I feel a deep connection, a sense of belonging to something larger than myself. I want to howl, to reach out and bathe in its untamed light. This silent connection with the moon, this unspoken understanding, is a bond that we all share. It’s woven into the fabric of my life, and I know I’m not alone in feeling this way.
Every beginning is born from an inevitable ending.
As I’ve experienced time and again, the New Moon marks the end of one phase and the beginning of another. It’s a time of bittersweet endings and exhilarating new beginnings. This is why I’m drawn to the New Moon, the start of all starts, the moment when I set my intentions for personal growth, and the universe conspires to help me achieve them.
It all begins with an intention, a state of mind, and an understanding that we are the creators of our destiny. From this idea, we embark on a new life, shaping and projecting our essence and depths to pursue self-love. Because “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,” or however you choose to name the Great Love, the Infinite Creator. And here, with the New Moon, I will use words to wish for something. It can be mystical or personal, but the key is to be intentional and not want for the absurd. This act of setting intentions during the New Moon ritual is a powerful tool that empowers us to take control of our lives and shape our future.
New Moon Ritual
If you’re picturing something dark and full of ancient spells, relax. It’s not like that. I want to offer you a way to celebrate the New Moon so that it, in turn, celebrates you—fulfilling a wish, satisfying a longing, or embracing you in its nurturing love.
To begin, prepare a space indoors or outdoors. You’ll need:
- Paper and something to write with
- White candles
- Objects you cherish and want to charge with the moon’s energy
- White clothing
- Music
Start by setting your intention to perform a New Moon ritual, ideally a few days in advance. Once your intention is set, your soul will know what to do, and your subconscious mind will begin preparing for the ritual.
Next, put on something white, choose music that opens your mind and helps you focus, and light your candle(s). You can use as many as you like and arrange them however you please. This is your ritual, so feel free to personalize it. Arrange the space (a table, desk, chair) in a way that brings you joy and satisfaction. You can add flowers, crystals, necklaces, bracelets, tarot cards, photos, essential oils in a diffuser, incense sticks, decorative objects, etc. – anything that pleases and awakens your inner divinity.
Settle in comfortably, close your eyes, and acknowledge what you’re about to do. Take ten deep, conscious breaths, open your eyes, pick up your pen, and write: “I wish…”
Let your mind wander freely, and don’t try to control what you write. This is how you discover your true desires, what your subconscious yearns for. New Moon intentions need to be genuine, personal, and liberating. The moon’s energy works to facilitate your growth, but if you ask for a $40,000 car, you won’t receive it. This isn’t about material desires.
The intention ritual symbolizes what you want from yourself this month, your stance toward a new beginning, and your awareness of the creative magic within you. The moon carries you, offering the space you need to become a better, more empathetic, more beautiful version of yourself.
Stay in this ritual for as long as you like. Be present in the moment and listen to your breath. Let the music move your energy through your body, and write down all your intentions for the coming month. This is your sacred time, your time to be present with yourself. Enjoy it and celebrate it!
At the end, say “Thank you” and momentarily look up at the sky, allowing the moon’s energy to embrace you.
New Moon December 4, 2021
The last New Moon of this year also brings a Total Solar Eclipse, which acts like an explosion of the old, making way for new beginnings. During this time, the power of the Moon and the Sun will combine, facilitating intentions and the end of 2021.
As this is the last Moon of the year, I intend to integrate the lessons of 2021 so that 2022 finds me more mature, grounded, and courageous. I will use the eclipse’s energy to make space for the awareness gained this year, and throughout December, I will work with the Moon to integrate the lessons of 2021.
I intend this, but you can choose what you need at the end of 2021. Be open and welcome the Moon’s energy into your home!
